New Outreach to Bereaved Families

When a family loses a child, it’s an incomprehensible tragedy. Parents are left devastated by their loss wondering how they will ever get through this. On Thursday evening, February 9, a support group for bereaved moms will meet in the Fireside Room at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, 11600 Atwood Road in Auburn. The Sacramento-South Placer County Chapter of the Bereaved Parents of the USA will facilitate this group that will meet the second Thursday evening of every month from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m.

“Knowing that there are other people who understand the pain of losing a child is very important to those dealing with the emotional upheaval that this type of tragedy brings,” says Chris Harder. Her son, Zachary Harder, died in June 2006 when he drowned at the South Fork of the Yuba River outside of Nevada City. “Hearing from others who are dealing with their grief encourages the newly bereaved that there is hope for them, too.” The moms enjoy a potluck dinner together and have a time of sharing about their kids, as well as a discussion on a topic related to grief. “We provide compassion, understanding and encouragement to the moms who come,” said Harder.

In addition to monthly gatherings for moms in Auburn and the Sacramento Area, the Bereaved Parents chapter also sponsors several events throughout the year that are open to other family members and friends. The Annual Walk to Remember and Picnic is in the spring. In September, they have a Bar-B-Q picnic, and in December a Candle Lighting service to honor their children. A group for dads meets on the first Thursday of each month at Carrow’s Restaurant in Roseville.

Those interested in knowing more about the meetings can email to ChrisHarder@HeritageOaksMC.com. Visit www.BereavedParentsUSA.com for additional resources the organization offers. Bereaved Parents of the USA is a non-profit nationwide self-help bereavement organization providing support, encouragement and hope to families who have lost children.
