Colfax High Journalism Student Leah Schafer Blogs From Vancouver Olympics 2010

2/21/10

Hi everyone!

Well, we’re here! On our flight, my family and I passed right over Mt. St. Helen (it’s HUGE), and 2 hours after takeoff, we arrived at Seattle International Airport. We then drove the 192 kilometers (yay for the metric system!) aka 119 miles to Vancouver, BC. The weather was amazing, with clear sunny skies, which is highly unusual for Washington in February. Along the way we passed by the Seattle Space Needle, the Olympic Peninsula, and a lot of beautiful countryside edged in snowy mountain ridges.

The big event today was the U.S. vs. Canada men’s hockey game. As my uncle said, here in Canada, the hype for hockey is about equivalent to basketball, football, and baseball in the U.S. all rolled into one event. Although I wasn’t able to go to the actual game (tickets were priced at around $3,000 U.S. dollars apiece!) I was able to watch it on TV along with my Canadian family. There was a lot of yelling, clapping, and shoving going on both in the rink and on the couch, and to top it all off, the U.S. won 5-3!!!! I’m super excited to go to downtown Vancouver tomorrow and walk around the Olympic venues.

Go Team U.S.A.!

-Leah
